HISTORY

Allianz Arena was built in the site of the historic Olympiastadion Munich in 2005. After Germany was declared as the hosts for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich made a joint approach to the city council to build a new stadium. At first, Olympiastadion Munich was considered to be expanded but later on, the decision was taken to build a completely new stadium. The construction expenditure for the stadium was €340m and it was designed by Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron. Construction started in late 2002 and the stadium was opened on May 30, 2005. TSV 1860 Munich played a friendly match against FC Nuremberg in the opening day. The stadium is named after financial service provider Allianz, who bought the naming rights to the stadium for 30 years.

FEATURES

Allianz Arena is famous for its luminous colour-changing exterior made of inflated ETFE plastic panels. The lower tier has 20,000 seats, 10,400 of them can be converted to a standing room to create space for 3,120 more spectators.

Away fans are seated in the third tier of the North Stand. Bayern usually allocated 3,500 away tickets during UCL matches.
